ABOUT

Anuencia is an audio-visual and sound project that engages deeply with a research and investigation element as part of the artistic process. “Anuencia” is a procedure taken from the concept described by Margot Loyola; the idea of learning something from a place and then reciprocating back to the community through performance. Performed by Bryan Phillips and Sooji Kim.

If this building could speak: (excerpts)

Gertrude Street Projection Festival 2016

Anuencia will embark on an investigative art process, delving into the layers of history of Fitzroy, exploring the site at 161 Gertrude street (Kit & Ace) through its changes and remains, using the building as a site for performance of the discoveries made in the process.

Gertrude Street and the surrounding Fitzroy area have experienced radical changes throughout its colonial history. In the 1950s the area reflected a microcosm of experiments in intensely overcrowded slum living and cross-cultural integration. This project is interested in the intimate stories expressing the vivid life of those bygone days. Sly-grog and gambling dens, families squeezing in by the numbers to crumbling tiny houses, jukeboxes split half Greek music and half rock n roll. Driven by a desire to connect with the heart of Fitzroy’s community landscape through the past to arrive at a deeper level of connection with its history today.

'The earliest mention of the jal tarang is found in Vātsyāyana's Kamasutra as playing on musical glasses filled with water. It is one of the 64 Arts and Science to be studied by a maiden.

In modern times, it has fallen into obscurity. Literally, jal tarang means "waves in water" but indicates motion of sound created or modified with the aid of water. In the wave-instruments, it is the most prominent and ancient instrument. This traditional instrument is used in Indian classical music.'

For one evening only MESS Ltd was transformed into an intimate performance space, showcasing immersive sets from Anuencia (Bryan Philips + Sooji Kim), Emah Fox, Mads Davey, xenosine and Naretha Williams.

Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS Ltd) is home to one of the most eclectic and historically significant collections of electronic instruments in the world. Synth Salon was a unique opportunity to see some of Melbourne’s best sound artists and musicians perform on selected rare synthesizers from this amazing hardware collection.

The event was part of MMW’s Self-Made series, which showcased and supported original, innovative music events by Melbourne’s emerging producers.

Synth Salon took place on stolen lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. No treaty was ever made and sovereignty has never been ceded."

LYONVILLE RESIDENCY

In January, Anuencia Project conducted a 4-day residency in Lyonville, Victoria. Visiting 3 different sites in the area we collected objects, sounds and images from the battered landscape. Gold mining, logging and farming have irreparably transformed the land from what it was just 200 years ago.
